Teddy bears originated in 1902 when then president Theodore Rosevelt went on a hunting trip that turned into a political quagmire after his well-intentioned, but foolish attendants cornered and clubbed an American Black bear then asked the president to shoot it to put it out of it's misery. He refused.
After much press ridicule and widespread coverage of the unfortunate incident, a fellow named Morris Michtom created the first little stuffed bear cub and called it "Teddy's bear." A sad beginning for such a sweet love-able little doll.
Teddy bear dolls are now among the most popular gifts to give to young children for birthdays and major holidays such as Valentine's Day and Christmas.
